Most people know Redwood as home to the tallest trees on Earth. But the parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild riverways, and nearly 40 miles of pristine coastline, all supporting a rich mosaic of wildlife diversity and cultural traditions. Together, the National Park Service and California State Parks manage these lands for the inspiration, enjoyment, and education of all people.

This is one of the most popular trails in Redwood National Park. The staff at Kuchel Visitor Center often recommend it to visitors since it’s short, level, and close to the visitor center. Unusually for a major redwood attraction, this trail is in a redwood upland environment at 1200 feet above sea level. Because of its elevation, the grove is often in the clouds and gets a lot more fog than the lowland groves. There’s a lush ground-cover of ferns, but the understory is open and the trail’s position high on a hillside affords some nice views of the forest. Rhododendrons are common and bloom in early June.

If you’ve never walked between fifty foot walls of ferns, than you haven’t experienced a hike like Fern Canyon Trail. This short trek transports you through a cool moist canyon with fortress-like walls covered top to bottom in enchanting ferns. The trail starts just inland from a vacant stretch of Northern California coast, and then turns inland into the lush shady forest housing Fern Canyon. The hike can be done as a 1.1-mile lollipop loop with 150 feet of elevation gain, but it is most enjoyable as a one mile out and back with 75 feet of elevation gain. Turn around at the top of Fern Canyon and replay the most exciting portion of the hike.

http://www.beachcalifornia.com/mckinnleyville-totem-pole.htmlWhat’s 160 feet high, and carved from a 500 year old tree weighing 57,000 pounds?  It’s the worlds largest totem pole – built out of the largest tree ever hauled across a California highway. The totem pole was carved to commemorate the grand opening of the Mckinleyville Shopping Center. Designed in 1962 by Ernest Pierson of Pierson’s Building Center in Eureka, he and a friend carved the monster tree in the parking lot of the center. It is located in the parking lot to the left and slightly behind Safeway on Central Avenue not far from the Arcata-Eureka Airport (in McKinleyville).
