Find out how
The name is pronounced "YAH-hots" by residents. The peoples that occupied it since prehistoric times (until pioneers and explorers arrived) virtually died out from western diseases before ethnographers could come along to find out how it was actually pronounced and what the word really meant. The present pronunciation is largely a guess (or compromise) between what some of the surrounding tribes called it (or remember the original residents calling it). In the Chinook language "yahuts" means something like "dark waters at the foot of the mountain" - which is a fair description of the locale. Additionally, there is a sad history of these and other coastal tribes being gathered and imprisoned here (in temporary reservation) during the late mid 1800s. Perhaps that is part of the reason that it has the aura of sadness, respect, and peace of a sacred Native burial ground to a variety of peoples today.
